Day 3 Cairo- Saqqara

Our day started with a visit to the original Cairo Museum…it’s housed in a colonial aged building with exhibits right out of the 19th Century…statues…mummies…artifacts all displayed in dusty wood and glass cabinets…add to that about a zillion people it all made for a claustrophobic experience…we rushed through to get to the King Tut room where we saw his golden mask (6.5/10) and then split. The rest of the tour was supposed to to more crowded places in old Cairo but I suggested we go instead to Saqqara the original pyramid located just outside of town. It was a good choice…hardly anyone there. The structures surrounding the pyramid were extraordinary especially for something built over 5000 years ago.

The pyramid was less impressive as the ones we visited yesterday but this one predated those and was sorta a practice pyramid. A couple of underground tombs and  we were off. Back to Rd town for a relatively inedible meal and then back to the hotel for a well earned nap.

In the evening we had booked a dance performance of tannoura…an Egyptian version of Sufi whirling Dervish dancing it was held in a centuries old mosque in an open courtyard. We were skeptical at first but it turned out to be mesmerizing…the lead performer was spinning/dancing for what seemed forever but was probably about 35-40 minutes.

By the end of the performance we were exhausted and were happy to go back to the hotel and pass out
