Day 5 Luxor
We had a 6am flight from Cairo to Luxor which meant we had to be at the airport by 4am…we had to be up by 2:30 to get an Uber at 3:15…it all worked out and we were met in Luxor by our tour guide and driver for a day long tour of 2 remote temples…Dendara and Abydos.
The first stop was a 2+ hour drive…Dendara was a Greek/Egyptian temple built around 300BC. A lot of the carving still had their original paint and the structure itself was in great shape. Unfortunately a lot of the carvings on the lower portions of the walls had been defaced by Coptic Christians who came later and viewed these carving as blasphemous. Enough remained untouched to make the experience awesome…the ceilings in particular still looked as they must have when the place was built.
We were pretty tired after walking around and decided to call it a day..Abydos would have to wait. We headed back to Luxor…stopped for a perfectly mediocre meal and then our hotel. Checked in, we passed out at 1pm and woke up at 6 the next day.
